Astor Row is a group of 28 row houses on the south side of West 130th Street, between Fifth and Lenox Avenues in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, Designated as an Historic District by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Committee in 1990. We were recently offered the offered a unique opportunity to restore and renovate one of the row houses in complete disrepair and neglect. We restored the exterior of the house following precise historic requirements of the NYC LPC, including historic paint color to exacting specifications for brick and mortar. The interior required a complete gut renovation, restoring it back to a single-family home and opening up the rear façade with full height steel window walls to the rear yard. The house successfully combines a precise historic restoration on the public face in keeping with the Astor Row houses while creating open contemporary spaces on the interior.
